Great Showing from Royal Jersey Ladies

bigpicThe Royal Jersey hosted the Ladies Island Match Play Championships last week and there was a fine showing by the host club’s players winning all three divisions.
This was the first time that the event was played over three days to encourage more participants and qualifying was held on Thursday followed by the quarter- and semi-finals being played in Friday with the divisional finals played yesterday.
The Second and Third divisions were played over 18 holes in the morning with Shelagh Herbert defeating Ann-Marie Pereira 1up for the Second Division and Jane Millar defeating Lorraine Simpson 5&4 for the Third Division.
The Championship Division was a battle between two Island Games players, Hannah Scriven and Helen Lagadu, both representing the Royal Jersey. The Championship match is over 36 holes and Hannah led four up going into lunch. Helen won the first hole in the afternoon to reduce the deficit. However, a consistent run by Hannah saw her lead extended to seven holes after the 25th but a fight back by Helen cut the lead to five at the (afternoon) turn.
A sandy par from Helen at the 30th pegged Hannah’s lead to four holes and they halved the 31st hole. Both players found trouble at the par 4 32nd (14th), but an excellent two putt from distance down the green won the hole for Hannah and she closed out the match 5&4 to win her first Island Championship.
Speaking after the match, Helen said that she had left herself too much to do after the morning round, but Hannah was a worthy winner as she was much more consistent over the course of the final.
This bodes well for the forthcoming Island Games where Hannah and Helen will be joined by club mate Flora Keites (who was unavailable for the Championships) and Juanita Adlington, last year’s winner.
The photo shows JLGA President Gina Austin-Walker presenting the trophy to Hannah.
