The Royal Jersey's Sam Vautier defeated clubmate Sam Crenan on the final hole of yesterday afternoon's Ashburton sponsored Jersey amateur Championship held at La Moye GC.

Conditions were not easy with the course running hard and fast and a testing easterly breeze making clubbing tricky. Vautier got off to a flyer winning the first four holes. A rare three-putt from Vautier in the fifth meant Crenan pulled a hole back. He pulled a further hole back after Vautier found trouble with his tee shot on the seventh. The next two holes were halved meaning Vautier had a two hole lead going into the back nine.

A missed green at the tenth by Vautier cut his lead to just the one hole after 10. The 11th and 12th were both halved in par, the latter thanks due to an excellent bunker save from Crenan.

A three-putt from Crenan on the 13th restored a two hole lead for Vautier. The 14th was halved in par following another 'up and down' from Crenan - his short game had been sharp all weekend - to Vautier's regulation two putt. Crenan was now two down with two to play, he needed to make a move, which he duly did. Whilst Vautier played safe and found the left rough at the 15th, Crenan pulled out his driver and found the front fringe of the green. Vautier's approach was safely aboard a similar distance from the hole. They both hit good putts to about 5/6 feet, but Crenan stepped up and holed his birdie putt. One down.

Crenan hit a huge drive into the wind at the 16th, only leaving him some 200 yds from the green. Vautier was in the rough to the right and played out to wedge distance. Crenan's 3 iron came up right of the elevated green. Once Vautier was safely in the green in 3, Crenan played a quality chip shot to 3 feet. Vautier missed, Crenan holed out for back-to-back birdies. All Square!

The two drives down the 17th both found the right rough. Vautier found the putting surface some 20 feet away. Crenan just outside him on the front fringe. Unfortunately, a sprinkler head meant Crenan could not putt, his preferred shot. His resultant chip 'popped' up on him and came up well short. Vautier putted up to 3 feet. Crenan charged the next some five feet past and when he missed the follow up, Vautier had a one hole advantage up the final hole.

Vautier found the right left rough with his drive whilst Crenan found the right semi. Vautier payed his second well and recovered to the front of the green. Crenan's approach was a flyer and he ended up in the deep rough at the back of the green. Vautier hit a fantastic approach putt that slid past the hole to 2 feet. When Crenan failed to up and down from the rough, he conceded the hole and the match.

A great match with some excellent golf and a great result for the Royal Jersey with the final being contested between two members. Sam Vautier will now fly to Guernsey on Sunday 17th June to play Danny Blondel, the Guernsey Champion, for the Channel Island Final.
