The Island Strokeplay Championship, sponsored by Rosscot, culminated on Saturday afternoon with a win for the Royal Jersey's young Sam Jaakola. The 4 round event commenced on Thursday afternoon with the first two rounds being payed on separate days and the final 36 holes played on Saturday.

After the first round former Island Champion and Royal Jersey member, Alex Guelpa led with a two over par 72 one shot ahead of work colleague and defending Champion Jeremy Phillips (La Moye). With a strong north easterly wind blowing conditions were very tough to score - the next best score was a 76. Sam Jaakola opened up with an 80.

Whilst conditions did not ease on Friday afternoon, scoring was much better. Sam followed up his opening 80 with a one over par 71, the best round of the day. Guelpa followed up his opening round with a 75 and Phillips carded a 73 to lead by one going into Saturday morning's third round. La Moye's Jo Hacker was fourth with a total of 149.

With the wind drying out the course all aspects of the competitors games were tested. Phillips returned a 74 in the morning to increase his lead to two shots over Guelpa after the latter returned a 75. Jaakola fired a 74 and now lay five shots off the lead. Hacker fell away somewhat with a 77.

Despite the conditions not improving early scoring in the afternoon was marginally better. At the business end of the field Phillips and Guelpa were battling out knowing there was only two shots between them, but in front of them Jaakola was quietly making in roads and eventually carded a final round level par 70. Phillips carded a 76 to lose out by a single stroke with Guelpa a further shot back. Richard Ramskill managed to secure fourth shot with his two rounds of 73 on Saturday.

This was an excellent result for Sam, especially firing a tournament best score on Saturday afternoon to clinch the event, as it proves that putting in the hard work and practice will reap results. Sam has been an ever-present fixture on the practice ground this summer and has retuned some good performances, but none as big as this one. Congratulations Sam!
